Heard a rumour on my forum that the annual cost of basic personalised MC plates is going up next week!
So, I rang MyPlates to ask what is happening. I was told that as of the 25th March the annual fee on registration plates is increasing as follows,
Car - currently $90 goes up to $99/year - an increase of $9
Motorcycle - currently $50 goes up to $99/year - an increase of $49!
WTF???!!!
I don't know what the more expensive ones will cost but might be worth a call to MyPlates to find out!
There has been no press release as yet and this will not come out until Monday apparently.
Have sent a tweet to Barry O'Farrell asking for a please explain. If no answer then I will send it to all motorcycle press/media.
This is how we lost our preferential tolling rate. Motorcycles are not cars and need to be considered separately. _________________ 2010 Bonneville A1 - black with black bits on it!

Personalized plates, phtttttt, it's a discretionary spend, we don't need em, they serve no useful purpose (other than perhaps a little ego massaging) so they can charge whatever they like for them. _________________ Cheers,

Everyone is entitled to their opinion of course.
Some people get personalised plates to match their lifestyle, maybe as a present or perhaps for a show bike that they are proud of. Yes it is a choice but it doesn't make it an invalid one if someone doesn't have them.
For me it is the principle of the matter. Motorcycles are not cars and need to be treated separately. This goes for tolls, CTP, registration, plates etc.
If people sit back and let this happen, like tolls and various other issues in the past then they have no right to complain later on... _________________ 2010 Bonneville A1 - black with black bits on it!

Even tho i dont bother with Personal plates myself, I do feel that is just wrong !
If there has to be an increase in cost, it should att leaast be % wise equal to a car !
Will be protesting this if I get the opportunity for sure _________________ www.ratscafe.org

Well I dont have personal plates, mainly because they cost more at rego time and we pay the buggers enough now.
That said I think this increase stinks, for gods sake guys (those in Govt) why keep picking on bike riders over other road users.
First thing that should be changed is get rid of those bloody B doubles in major citys.
Anyway I am happy to lend my name to any petition.
Personal plates in my opinion the same as any other mod we make to our bikes, Its a personal thing and like any other aesthetic mod it is a bit of a personal ego thing. I have never owned a bike I didnt modify and love the variations on a theme that bike riders come up with.
I also thnk that some of the personal plates are quite clever and entertaining. XLR8 and KEPT as examples off the top of my head.
So Bazza pull ya head in and get your chronies to rethink this.
(Hops of fruit box) Have a great weekend guys. |

So down there you pay yearly to have them ?
Up here you pay up front and that is it, just your yearly rego cost _________________

I've got 2 sets, the older was just a one off fee. The newer are $50 / year ontop of your rego fee. I think the annual fee came in about 4 years ago. |

The costs have officially gone up on the MyPlates website
Personal MC plates - were $50 now $99 per year
Personal Plus MC plates - were $170 now $220 per year
I have been talking to Barry O'Farrell about it directly via Twitter. The price rise is quote - "decision of a private company (not government). Former government contracted out the service and didn't retain any power to regulate pricing".
I asked what % of the fee the government gets and he said "don't believe we get a percentage of fees (think its an annual licensing fee) but will check and advise
I then suggested that the RTA should offer a choice to hand back plates if the customer wished to avoid the extra cost. Mr O'Farrell's reply was - "agree - I'll enquire about that too".
Waiting now on the response... _________________ 2010 Bonneville A1 - black with black bits on it!

Spoke to My Plates and they have no intention of notifying customers. They have approx 220,000 personal plates customers (40,000 to 50,000 on two wheels!) and notifying them might increase their workload to a level that they may not be able to sustain apparently. The only notice you get is the increased price on your registration papers.
You can hand back you personal plates if you don't want to pay the extra and get a general issue plate for $39. This plate has whatever is on it out of box.
Have sent some more messages to Mr O'Farrell and await a reply... _________________ 2010 Bonneville A1 - black with black bits on it!

That will prove an amusing and perhaps informative read, thank you Stan! My family is related to the Hansards of the Hansard so it gives me a little smile whenever I read Parliamentary record. _________________ 2010 Bonneville A1 - black with black bits on it!

Quote: | The fee is a recurring fee and in New South Wales currently is somewhat higher than that charged by some of the other States or Territories |
Quote: | The bill will enable the concessionaire to fix fees and charges for special numberplates and related services without a requirement for ministerial approval or gazettal |
Quote: | Appropriate ministerial approval and gazettal requirements will continue to apply to all other fees and charges set in connection with the service provided by the Roads and Traffic Authority. |
Only got this far then scrolled to bottom to see motion passed.
What can i say cept load of BS
Added later
Quote: | Currently New South Wales is the only State in Australia that charges an annual fee, as opposed to the upfront fee, for personalised numberplates. South Australia charges an annual fee of $200 for custom plates and $150 for Euro plates, but in that State it is still possible to buy personalised plates for a one-off fee of $180. That simply is not possible in New South Wales. Members will recall that when the annual fee was introduced in 2003 the concept was opposed by the Coalition. One can no longer sensibly buy personalised numberplates as a present for a friend or relative. Indeed, it has become the gift that keeps on taking, rather than the gift that keeps on giving. Frankly, I would not want a gift like that. |
Quote: | Mr WAYNE MERTON: He does not, like me. In fact, the member for Macquarie Fields does not pay any registration at all on the other vehicle he uses on public roads—and quite rightly so because it is a pushbike. Bicycles require no special numberplates, and long may that continue |
Good to see pushbikes are properly represented ! _________________ www.ratscafe.org
