|
|
With Victoria facing the first salvo on compulsory hi-vis clothing it is time for all riders to fire back!
There is no evidence that hi-vis clothing does anything to reduce motorcycle accidents and improve safety on the road. Other vehicle drivers seem to have a hard enough time trying to see buses and fire trucks let alone a motorcycle.
Personally I do not relish the thought of being dressed up in a day-glo safari suit to go riding without any proof it is doing some good. With the increasing overuse of hi-vis clothing in so many aspects of daily life our brains tend to process and ignore things we are over conditioned to rather than draw attention to the bright colours.
You can help fight against yet another unproven and thoughtless process by signing the petition against the idea in Victoria! If it gets adopted in Vic, it won't be long before the other nanny states decide to try it as well

You don't have to sign it. You don't have to say anything at all. You can choose to sit back and accept anything if it happens or you can stand up and be counted. It is completely your valid choice.
You can make it a non public signature by logging in and changing your privacy settings.... Don't give them your full home address...use a Hotmail email etc etc.... _________________ 2010 Bonneville A1 - black with black bits on it!

I very much doubt we will lose by one vote, just as they did with the gun laws, if the sons of bitches wan't to do it all the petitions in the world won't stop em.
They will introduce it toward the end of an election term when they know they're about to get dumped (nothing to lose) and of course the incoming govt won't repeal it, not our fault blame the other lot. _________________ Cheers,

I'd like to see the evidence that the use of hi-vis clothing cuts down on accidents. If that evidence was available and stands up to scrutiny I'd vote for it, some how I don't think that will happen. |

Hey Guys,
I have a large network of ppl in the public service in Canberra and my sister works for the Speaker of the House of Parliament in Victoria. I'll try to find out what the evidence is. Much better to refute this using logic rather than emotion. Let's see if we can make them look silly - media loves that. And I was married to a journalist for 18 years - still good mates. We could have some fun here.

I think the only outfit you can wear to get noticed on a bike is a blue short sleeve shirt and a white helmet, (would also help if you were on a k1200 or a fjr1300)
Or wear a duck suit, as you can wear all the hi-vis get up you like with all the flashing lights you can buy and still not be seen, but put a mother and baby ducks on the road and the whole world screams to a stop.
I drive a vehicle that is 2.4m wide, nearly 4m high and 11m long painted a variety of colours, with 2 halogen rotating beacon and 8 additional flashing lights yet still need some teenager with a 'slow' sign to be seen.
On worksites though, the amount of times that people have walked behind me while reversing is stupendous, but the only one I've nearly hit was some douche that was too cool for hi vis and was wearing a black jumper and black pants against a backdrop of a granite cutting, so I think hivis still has its place on worksites.
The best way to be seen is eye contact, but if the other person has their face buried in their iPhone, it's not real easy.
Having said that, I wear yellow camo draggin jeans when on the bike, not so much for the bright colour, more the fact they are absolutely hideous. They also get quite a few comments about how awful they are. Insults aside, people have seen me

There is no compelling, well researched and statistically backed evidence at all that hi-vis clothing makes you more visible to other drivers and road users.
I have quite a few research papers on conspicuity in relation to vehicles and accidents etc if anyone is bored enough to want to read them.
They need to be able to back up the suggestion that you are more visible with proofs based on real life scenarios and data gathering.... _________________ 2010 Bonneville A1 - black with black bits on it!

I heard the same comments when the helmet law was passed and those people chose to use a helmet and ride in the end
Just as i would if it became law to use Hi-vis because i like to ride and will continue till i am not able to do so
