Well it's good to know someone else has noticed the increases for personalised plates. I have sent this letter to Myplates: -

From 21-04-2011 to 21-04-12, the annual charge for Cycle Colours was $50.00. From 22-04-12 to 21-04-12 my annual charge is $99.00 being a 98% increase. Considering I have owned the plates for about 3 years combined with the fact that they don't need to be replaced in the near future, I can't see that the invoicing costs could reflect this unrealistic charge. How can you justify this increase? I am reconsidering renewing my rego with these very expensive plates, I can get them free off the RMA.

This is their response: -

Content is an important part of the SNP business and it is important that we align the pricing of our content range.

All Personalised plates will now have the same fee. As we plan to release formats currently only available to Motorcycles to Light Vehicles as well, we have elected to have the same fee across the vehicle types.

Personalised Content released to a motorcycle plate cannot be issued to any other vehicle type. Therefore, the same fee is applied to Personalised content placed on either a motorcycle or a light vehicle.

P+ content is an important part of the SNP business, whether it be on a cycle or light vehicle. It is important that we price this content accordingly. Originally, our aim was to have the same pricing across all vehicle types for P and P+ content. However, due to our loyal P+ following in the cycle community, we have elected to keep the P+ fee as half of what the same plate would cost on a light vehicle.

This is the first increase since 2009. We have not elected to pass on
the small CPI increases of a few dollars each year, but elected to
bundle them into the one increase this year. There are no further
increases in the foreseeable future

If you have any further enquiries please do not hesitate to contact myPlates on 13 17 58 between 8.30 am and 5.00 pm (AEST) Monday to Friday and 8.30 am to 12.00 pm (AEST) Saturday.

Well quite frankly I think this really sucks and they have made a very poor decision to increase the charges and they have not justified the increases. A crock of shit if you ask me.

In case you are not aware, anyone wishing to place personalised number plates on either their car or motorbike, incur a purchase/order fee of up to $160 and then a recurring annual fee of up to $440.00. These are todays prices and can be expected to increase in future years.

The Roads and Maritime Services (previously known as the Roads and Traffic Authority) have said in the past that these ongoing fees contribute towards road safety. There is a train of thought at the moment that these fees are nothing more than a revenue raising exercise and that it would be a better business plan to abolish the ongoing annual fee and have a once only application/production fee. Most people are content or accept that a nominal fee be charged to supply personalised plates but reject a recurring annual fee structure.

I believe that other states do not charge a recurring fee. If adopted in NSW, this approach would encourage a larger number of applications for personalised plates for both cars and motorbikes and may well be revenue positive.

There is a petition opposing the increase in the cost of personalised number plates and the manner that the cost is recouped ie an annual ongoing fee for the life of the plate. I am happy to pay a premium to purchase a special plate, but will not subscribe to a fee structure that charges annually for the privilege. As mentioned earlier, the annual fee may increase in the future. No thanks.

If you agree, then please sign the petition at:

Would you please be kind enough to pass these details on to your friends and contacts. If you don’t, nothing will happen to you, but it would be appreciated if you did sign the petition
.
