G'day,

I'm on the look out for some either large diameter copper pipe around the 6" mark or some copper sheeting around 2mm thick and at least 600mm x 400mm pieces.

These are for a heat shield project I'd dearly love to get started.

Any info on where I could start looking would be great.

Davo.

Hey Davo wouldn't the copper absorb the heat and get hot? Or a you making a heatsink? Confused

I thought something like stainless would make an alright heatshield...or have I got everything arse up? Rolling Eyes

OK Davo, I'll bite.
What is the project????

Have to agree with Pete on the copper. It absorbs heat rather than deflect it and gets pretty hot real quick, but I reckon you know that.

If it is for an exhaust pipe sheild then as Pete said, stainless is the go. make it out of a section 6 or 8mm bigger than your stock pipe, cut up mandril bends for the corners and TIG it all up. But I reckon you know that too, so what's the go.

Fill us in. Makin a still, a giant billabong, Ya hands are getting too cold and you want to run a heat exchanger from the exhaust pipe to the handlebars???? That'd be cool Laughing Laughing Laughing

Ya both right copper is an awesome conductor of heat. My idea isn't based around practicality!

What I'm going for is an old school look of back yard improvisation. I plan to over come the heat transfer problem through some fiber washers where the heat shields touch the pipe and some thermal insulating cloth similar to header pipe wrap fixed to the inside of the shield.

So far I have found out plumbing suppliers have 4" which would be ok as I can flatten it out a little but they only sell by the 6 meter length @ around $550! I don't need that much or want to pay that much.

Have you thought of an old gas hotwater heater or similar and then gutting it for the copper? Then again I guess some old scavenger would have already done that...

How about getting a piece of stainless or similar copper plated? Get the functionality and the old skool bodgy boy looks! It'd have to be cheaper than buying a piece of copper outright...wouldn't it? Confused
