I was asked a friend to start this up.

I have a hobby of collecting music CDs, they must be originals, no burnt ones allowed. This hobby started when I looked at list that Rolling Stone magazine produced a couple of years ago. I have now collected what RS says are 496 of the top 500 Albums. Of the remaining 4, one is out of print, one cost $400, I am saving for another at $150, and the last is on back order. So I may never get the ones I want.

The list is really diverse and starts with the oldest being from a a blues player of the 1920s called Robert Johnson. Artists like Jimmy Page (whose photo is on this site somewhere I saw) have recognised the influence that Robert had on blues music.

And you get a couple of Frank Sinatras on the list.

The list has more music from the 1960s and 70s than any other time and not surprisingly heaps of The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and Bruse Springsteen, none of which my step children think is cool.

So, the RS top 10 on their list are:

1. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, The Beatles
2. Pet Sounds, The Beach Boys
3. Revolver, The Beatles
4. Highway 61 Revisited, Bob Dylan
5. Rubber Soul, The Beatles
6. What's Going On, Marvin Gaye
7. Exile on Main Street, The Rolling Stones
8. London Calling, The Clash
9. Blonde on Blonde, Bob Dylan
10. The Beatles ("The White Album"), The Beatles

For my friend there are three Nirvana albums, Unplugged, and In Utero and Nevermind, but they are a long way down the list.

I am now onto collecting the Top 1000 Albums you must hear before you Die.

Wow that was cool. I found the top 500 but cannot find the top 1000 list you mentioned. As a matter of interest which ones are you missing in Top 500 ?

The top 1000 Albums are listed in a Book that my wife bought for me last Christmas. Unlike the top 500 they are not rated, and are indexed based on the year of their release. There are a large number of differences between the Rolling Stone list and the 1000 list, with far less Beatles, Rolling Stones and a range of other artists.

Glad you asked about the Albums I am after in the RS top 500. They are
Jackie Wilson - Mr Excitement,
Loretta Lynn - Greatest Hits,
Dianna Ross and the Suptremes - Anthology, and
The Ronettes - Presenting the Fabolous Ronettes.

The only one I can find at a reasonable price is the Jackie Wilson. Two of the remaining are not available, and the best I can do for the Ronettes is $A400.00.

But I will keep looking.

Now to the 1000 Album list.
